When Should My Child Have a Vision Test Done?

When it comes to your child, you want to make sure that all of their needs are being met and they’re given every opportunity to succeed. Part of that is making sure that they’re able to see clearly and they have access to glasses if that is something they may need. Dr. Allyson Self-Stoico at A to Z Pediatrics in Pasadena, CA, can explain when it’s time for your child to have vision testing done and how it can help your child succeed in life.

When to Get Vision Tests for Your Child

The only way vision issues can be truly detected are through eye exams, but it’s important to look for signs in your child that vision testing may be needed from their pediatrician. If you notice that they’re struggling to see or their teacher points out that they’re having issues reading the board in class, it might be time to consult our pediatrician to talk about vision testing.

Vision issues may not always be completely obvious, especially with younger children who may not be able to express their problems. There are different conditions that their doctor will be looking for, and this could include:

  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)
  • Ptosis (drooping eyelid)
  • Strabismus (eyes pointing in different directions)
  • Myopia (nearsightedness)

Your child’s first eye exam should be around 6 months old to make sure that they are developing correctly. After that, the next exam should be at age 3 and then at age 5. This helps identify issues before they become severe and can help your child become adjusted to glasses at an early age.
